Course Objectives

By the end of the course the delegate will be up to date and properly equipped with the knowledge, skills and resources to be able to operate the tractor in a Safe and Productive way (and for a successful assessment, as required). The delegate will also understand the differences in control of other tractors.

Course Content

    • Pre-use safety
      • Considerations for risk assessments
      • Identify the risks and hazards associated to the site and task
      • Select appropriate Personal Protective Equipment
      • Carry out daily checks and maintenance as indicated in the operators manual
      • Identify and report any faults
    • Safe procedures
      • Mounting and dismounting
      • Identify and understand the function of all instruments, controls and safety decals
      • Observation
      • Perform a safe start
      • Braking and safe stopping procedures
      • Safe stopping procedure
    • Operate the tractor
      • Economic fuel use
      • Use of gears and speed
      • Use of brakes
      • Manoeuvring
      • Use of controls
      • Planning/safe movement
    • Hitching trailers and mounted implements
      • Knowledge of hitching
      • Pre-use checks
      • Hitching tractor to trailer (incl. hydraulic couplings)
      • Tuition on driving with trailer attached
      • Tipping trailer safely
      • Attaching three point linkage implement
      • Knowledge of speeds/systems
      • Pre-use/compatibility checks
      • Correct procedure for the fitting and use of PTO’s
      • Basic use of tractor mounted loader
    • Inspection of tractor after use
    • Assessment - as required, approximately 2  hours of assessment to show:
      • Safe preparation, operation & handling of the tractor
      • Legal and safety requirements
      • Operating and complying with legal requirements
      • Removing and refitting trailers, implements and loader attachments

    Who should attend?

    Suited for anyone to whom the regulations apply; anyone required to use a Tractor as part of their work in agriculture, amenity, forestry, industrial and horticultural industries. This would include novice and experienced operators who require certification on their skills updating.
